Common questions about joining and flying with the 539th
Simply join our Discord server using the "Apply Now" button and introduce yourself in the welcome channel. One of our staff members will get you set up with the appropriate roles and point you to our new pilot orientation materials. There is no formal application process - just hop in and start flying!
You need a copy of DCS World (the free version works for some aircraft) and the aircraft modules you want to fly. We also require Discord for communication and recommend SRS (Simple Radio Standalone) for in-game comms. No prior experience is necessary - we will teach you everything you need to know.
While we primarily operate transport aircraft like the C-130, UH-60, and CH-47, we welcome pilots of all aircraft types. If you are interested in logistics and support roles but only have fighter modules, you can still participate in escort and support missions.
We ask that members be 18 or older due to the mature themes sometimes present in military simulation and general Discord community standards. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis for mature individuals.
Our servers are up 24/7 for casual flying. We have organized operations typically on weekends (times announced in Discord). We have members across multiple time zones, so there is usually someone online to fly with.
Absolutely not. We understand real life comes first. Fly when you can, as much or as little as you want. There are no mandatory attendance requirements or activity minimums.
We aim for a balance between realism and fun. We use realistic procedures, callouts, and tactics, but we are not overly strict about military formality. Think of it as "serious but not stuffy" - we want immersion without the stress.
Everyone starts somewhere! We have experienced pilots who are happy to help newcomers learn the ropes. We offer informal training sessions and have documentation to help you get up to speed. Do not be afraid to ask questions.
We use a minimal mod setup to keep things simple. Required mods include SRS for communications and potentially some terrain-specific assets. Full details and download links are in our Discord server-info channel.
We use a custom CTLD-based system for cargo operations. You can load troops, cargo, and vehicles, transport them to forward locations, and track your deliveries. The system includes warehouse management, supply tracking, and mission completion stats. Full documentation is available on our Documentation page.
We run both! Our primary servers feature PvE campaigns with dynamic AI opposition. We occasionally run PvP events and have separate servers for different game modes. Check Discord for current server status.
We are a laid-back group of aviation enthusiasts who enjoy flying together. We joke around, share stories, and help each other improve. Drama and toxicity are not tolerated - we are here to have fun and fly virtual aircraft.
Of course! We do not require exclusivity. Many of our members fly with multiple communities. We just ask that you represent us well when wearing the 539th tag.
Join our Discord and ask in the general chat or reach out to any member with a staff role. We are happy to help and answer any questions you might have about the wing.
